The English Way of Death - Dr Julian Litten Friday March 12th 2010 6.30 for 7.00pm (please note slightly earlier time) This illustrated talk will show how we moved away from the pomp and panoply of the post-medieval funeral to the clinical anonymity of present-day obsequies, explaining the rise of the undertaking trade and the changing etiquette which governed burial: for the rich, embalming, heraldic parades and intramural burial in the family vault - and for the poor, parochial processions through muddy fields and burial in a corner of the churchyard.
