Working parties

2009 marked the beginning of the implementation of the new West Cemetery Landscape Management Plan that will take years, if not decades, to complete.  The plan, in short, is to thin the trees so we can reintroduce trees, shrubs and wildflowers indigenous to the area as a setting for the spectacular structures and memorials.  We aim to conserve and enhance the existing sense of mystery and beauty and the value of the Cemetery as a sanctuary for wildlife, while at the same time respecting the needs of grave owners and visitors, and protecting the buildings and monuments.  Joining a working party offers a different way of experiencing the cemetery, the chance to become part of a friendly group and take part in a worthwhile conservation project.

Landscape working parties normally take place twice a month – one Saturday and one Sunday.  We welcome new volunteers aged 16 or over.  Groups run from 10.30am – 1pm, and 2pm – 4.30pm (4pm November to March).  Gardening and conservation experience is not essential since volunteers carry our simple tasks using hand tools under the direction of experienced leaders.  All tools and work gloves are provided.

“I want to thank you, because I really enjoyed it.  The place is wonderful, the group is very friendly.  I wish I could stay.” - Giulia Massini, on her return to Italy.
